NAME: Wei Wuxian (Courtesy Name, last name Wei, first name Wuxian) | Wei Ying (Birth Name, last name Wei, first name Ying)
AGE: Mid-30s, technically. But he's been dead for sixteen years and died when he was in his early 20s.
CANON: The Untamed
CANON POINT: Post-Episode 50
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: Nothing comes to mind!
SUITABILITY: Wei Wuxian meets the age criteria for the game. In the novels that The Untamed is based on, Wei Wuxian is in a relationship with his companion, Lan Wangji and they end the series by getting married. The novels showcase a few explicit sex scenes and refer to Wei Wuxian's history of being fairly flirtatious. In the show version of events, they still refer to his history, mostly with women, but unfortunately Chinese censorship laws required the show to remove the homosexual relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. Despite this, I'll be taking him from the show canon over the novel canon because with his history described in the show, he'll be quite eager and willing to participate in Golden Peacock's premise and since he isn't married, he won't be tied down and unable to engage with the setting.
For the most part, Wei Wuxian is clever, curious, and competitive â which makes him an interesting fit for Golden Peacock's setting and premise and will motivate him greatly to engage with it.
HISTORY: Overall history | Timeline | Note: History below follows the web series canon instead of the novel canon with a few major differences from these links, which refer to the novel.
PRE-DEATH: Wei Wuxian spent most of his childhood as an orphan wandering the streets after his parents died. He was found when he was nine by the head of the Jiang Clan, Jiang Fengmian. At fifteen, he was sent to study at Cloud Recesses, the home of another cultivation clan, the Lan Clan, where he met Lan Wangji who became an important figure in his life. After studying at Cloud Recesses, he and Lan Wangji went off to find the pieces of the Yin Iron â a malevolent piece of cultivation magic that Lan Wangji was tasked with finding and suppressing.
A bit after their travels, Wei Wuxian and his martial brother, Jiang Cheng, were sent to the Wen Clan to study under them as well. The difference is that the Wen Clan were basically evil and this was just a ruse to dominate and humiliate the other clans. During their "studies" with the Wen Clan, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were trapped in a cave with a monster â the Xuanwu of Slaughter. They killed it, finding a piece of the Yin Iron inside of it, which Wei Wuxian kept.
After this, during a hostile interaction with the Wen Clan, things exploded and the Wen Clan massacred the entire Jiang Clan, leaving only Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and their sister, Jiang Yanli alive. The Wen Clan take over the Jiang Clan home, Lotus Pier, and soon after their escape, Jiang Cheng is caught and taken back to Lotus Pier by the Wen Clan, who then remove his golden core. This is significant because after Wei Wuxian saves him, he secretly transfers his own golden core to Jiang Cheng, leaving him helpless and without magic when he's caught by the Wen Clan afterwards.
The Wen Clan then dump Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds where the only way for Wei Wuxian to survive without his golden core is to turn to demonic cultivation. Using the Yin Iron he found in the Xuanwu of Slaughter as a power source, he is able to become proficient and survive. He spends three months in the Burial Mounds, after which he escapes and enacts bloody revenge on the members of the Wen Clan that killed the Jiang Clan and threw him in the Burial Mounds.
This begins Wei Wuxian's descent into madness as the resentful energy he harnesses to use demonic cultivation effects his temperament and mind. It makes him more rash and emotional as a result. The Wen Clan was defeated by the other clans during this but to Wei Wuxian's displeasure, the other clans began to treat the Wen Clan survivors (the elderly, women, and children) as evil as the main Wen Clan perpetrators. Wei Wuxian couldn't stand this and after finding out that some of the Wen Clan who helped him during the Lotus Pier massacre (Wen Ning and Wen Qing) were being tortured by the other clans, he enacted revenge and saved the remnants of the Wen Clan, escaping back to the Burial Mounds and defecting from the Jiang Clan in the process.
After this, the other clans begin to refer to him as the Yiling Patriarch (Yiling being the place the Burial Mounds are located). They also are afraid of him because of his powerful abilities and use of demonic cultivation. Things escalate from there when Wei Wuxian is blamed for the death of members of the Jin Clan, including the heir Jin Zixuan. It's at a confrontation in Nightless City after the Jin Clan executes the remaining Wen Clan survivors that Wei Wuxian's martial sister, Jiang Yanli is killed and in his grief and agony over everything that's happened, Wei Wuxian commits suicide.
POST-RESSURECTION: Sixteen years later, Wei Wuxian is resurrected by Mo Xuanyu (who sacrifices his body to Wei Wuxian) in order to enact revenge on his behalf. Shortly after his resurrection, Wei Wuxian reunites with Lan Wangji who immediately recognizes him as being Wei Wuxian. The two collaborate in trying to figure out why he was resurrected and some of the mysteries of the past.
A lot happens but generally the key point is that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji discover that there have been other cultivators, namely Jin Guangyao, who have been orchestrating things since before Wei Wuxian's death to pin a lot of incidents on him and make him public enemy number one. This builds to a confrontation at Guanyin Temple where Wei Wuxian is able to confront Jin Guangyao and resolve some of the mysteries of the past. The show ends on the note that afterwards, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji travel around together Just Being Pals (unlike in the novel, where they get married). The End.
ABILITIES:
CUTLIVATION: Cultivation is a practice of mystic and martial arts that helps the person who performs it (the cultivator) become strong and extend their lifespan. Wei Wuxian is a cultivator part of a cultivation clan, the Jiang Clan, and practices these arts until he loses his golden core. That's when he switches to demonic cultivation (explained below). He still has some ability in cultivation though, but his spiritual power is weak and he is unable to perform the great feats he used to do without exhausting his body's power with the risk of death. There's no clear explanation on what cultivators can't do, they're basically magic users who have a lot of power over many things. As Wei Wuxian is already weak, he likely won't use these powers for anything dangerous within Golden Peacock, unless prompted by an event or something like it.
DEMONIC CULTIVATION: In the novels, Wei Wuxian is the inventor of Demonic Cultivation. It's a method of cultivating that uses resentful energy instead of spiritual energy. The main source of resentful energy are the undead. In the show, demonic cultivation already exists before Wei Wuxian begins to practice it â he merely perfects it and becomes the most proficient in it. The key thing about demonic cultivation is that it does not require a golden core, which is why Wei Wuxian turned to using it in the first place.
INTELLIGENCE: Wei Wuxian is incredibly intelligent. Most importantly, his deductive reasoning is one of his most valuable qualities. Over the course of the series, he's able to deduce a fair number of the plot points by just observation and critical thinking. He's also an inventor, inventing a number of cultivation tools and methods that get adapted by the cultivation world at large, even if they rarely want to credit him for the invention.
SWORDSMANSHIP: Wei Wuxian is an excellent swordsman, one of the most proficient of his generation. As a youth, he loved to show off his swordsmanship and used his sword, Suibian, to do practically everything. It's only after the loss of his golden core, where he's unable to wield Suibian for too long that he pivots from swordsmanship to using his flute in order to perform magical feats. There is a chance he can still use a sword in general without his golden core, just not a cultivation sword, but that's a little unclear.
THE SIX ARTS: Wei Wuxian is a master of the Six Arts, the basis of education in ancient Chinese culture. While he uses all six pretty regularly, the most notable one is his skill with music. After giving up his swordsmanship because of the loss of his golden core, he focused on using his flute, Chenqing, as the source of his power and his magical focus. He channeled a lot of his abilities as a demonic cultivator through the use of music, using his flute or his ability to whistle to command the undead through sound. He is also proficient in calligraphy, but notably his handwriting is extremely messy.
OTHER: More listed here.
VICES:
REVENGE: The main vice of Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian's major catalyst for descending into demonic cultivation and becoming the Yiling Patriarch is his revenge against the Wen Clan for the Lotus Pier massacre. There is no hesitation in him when it comes to enacting his revenge, no doubt in him at all. He does not have the same kind of guilt or restriction that might be found in anyone else when it comes to revenge, murder, or torture of those who wronged him and his family. Even into the present, he hasn't shared any remorse for his actions â only remorse for the actions that he feels are his responsibility and have harmed his family instead.
MISCHIEF: One of Wei Wuxian's key character traits is his mischievousness. He likes to play pranks, to tease, to poke and prod. He's got an insatiably curiosity that leads him to places he shouldn't go and part of that results in him finding new ways to cause chaos and create problems on purpose. He also gets bored easily and that leads him to doing things he shouldn't do. While the older he's gotten, the more he's mellowed out, he still has a cheeky streak a mile long and doesn't hesitate before throwing himself into other people's business just to see what happens.
ARROGANCE: As a youth, Wei Wuxian was extremely arrogant. He would boast to whoever and wherever about his talent and the unfortunate thing was, he was typically justified in doing so. If he claimed he could do something well or better than someone else, he could. There aren't any times in the series where he's knocked down a peg as a result, most of his downfall is centered on his self rather than inflicted on him by anyone else. As an adult, he still carries that extreme arrogance with him but it's tempered by the hardships he's been through. Even so, his reaction to anyone questioning his ability to do something is to still prove them wrong even now.
VIRTUES:
LOYAL: Wei Wuxian is extremely loyal, to an unhealthy degree. It is one of his chief qualities. So many of his larger choices â turning to demonic cultivation, sacrificing his golden core to Jiang Cheng â stem from his loyalty to the Jiang Clan and his family. Even saving the remnants of the Wen Clan and becoming the Yiling Patriarch comes from the fact that Wen Ning and Wen Qing saved him, Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Yanli when they were on the run from the other Wen Clan members and he felt it was his responsibility to protect them afterwards. Wei Wuxian would go through any bit of trauma in order to help / save the people he is closest to if he had to. He's ride or die, no matter what.
HEARTFELT / EMOTIONAL: Wei Wuxian is extremely emotional and driven by his heart over his brain. Even when the choices laid out in front of him are contradictory in nature and the logical choice is one thing while the emotional choice is another â he will always choose the choice that resonates the most with his heart. He is driven by love for his family, for his people, and all of his choices are made with love even when they're the wrong choices. He is well aware of this trait of his and even when it might be the wrong path to take â he does not care as long as his own conscience is clear.
CHARISMATIC: Wei Wuxian is good with people. He likes to make friends, makes people like him in spite of himself. He can walk into a room and walk out with ten phone numbers and a kiss on the mouth. It's helped him a lot in the course of the series, made it easy for him to get information from innkeepers and local villagers when traveling and trying to figure out the mysteries of the past. He's just the type of guy that's fun to be around and draws people to him magnetically. This would especially help him in Golden Peacock when it comes to acclimating to the setting and finding people to, well, sleep with.
SUIT REQUESTS:
âĨ HEARTS: Wei Wuxian is driven by his emotions. While it was clear during his teenage years that he was an impulsive yet clever boy whose brain worked too quickly for him to handle, it's during his descent into the Yiling Patriarch that his temperament changes and his feelings for the people he cares for and over the injustices he sees dominate his mind even more. It would be great to play with the Heart suit for Wei Wuxian because it would mirror his own capricious emotional state during most of the series. While, at the end of the series and the canon point I'm taking him from, he's become a little more at peace with himself â there's still that lingering melancholy from all the emotional upheaval that he's gone through and thus, would effect the way he navigates being a Heart suit in the game.
âĻ DIAMONDS: Diamonds as a suit would fit Wei Wuxian because of his abilities. Wei Wuxian is a necromancer, for the most part, and controls the undead as well as malicious spirits and energies. He cares very little for respecting the dead and sees them more as a tool to use to meet his goals. This would reflect the "body" aspect of Diamonds because it would in turn take the loss of control and physical dominance he inflicts on the dead and other entities and instead turn it back on himself. It would be fun to play with as Wei Wuxian has little experience with losing control of his body and has such a mastery over himself that this would catch him off guard and he wouldn't know how to handle it. He is also notorious for being handsy/clingy with people and has canonly expressed a love of skinship â Diamonds would only increase that already present character trait of his.
RANK REQUESTS: No preference. Both the lower and higher ranks would reflect where he's gone narratively in the show, with his current state probably most reflecting the middle â so whatever the mods think suit him best works for me.
SAMPLES:
Sample One: TDM â Top level on Golden Peacock TDM for January 2025. Showcases interacting with the setting and how Wei Wuxian will likely perform within the game.
Sample Two: Meme â Sexting thread between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian that transitions to prose. Showcases a Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian who are married; Wei Wuxian is pretty smitten. Lots of emotion in the prose.
